Pebble Rings

This collection of Forager Rings is made of individually collected beach pebbles from Birdlings Flat (Canterbury) and Gemstone Beach (Western Southland). The rough unpolished bronze reflects these rugged, windswept beaches in its finish. The patina and texture of the metal mirrors the salt crusted, wind blasted rawness of our coast line. Even while the colours and rounded gentle shapes of these beach stones speak of their unique creation and journey to the coast, they simultaneously recall the varied environments of a wider New Zealand. Each stone carries with it the clay beds, tussocky mountains, volcanic craters, dark mountains, gentle forests and grassy hills of Aotearoa.  To create this collection of rings I took the ring mounts with me to the beach and individually selected stones to fit the mounts of the smaller rings, reworking stones for the larger rings as little as possible. I wanted this series to be direct and to house a variety of stones in their natural form.
